How Young Is Too Young? 12-Year-Old Model Sparks Controversy

How Young Is Too Young? 12-Year-Old Model Sparks Controversy

Thylane Blondeau, who walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier at age 4, is the magazine’s April cover star, and Jalouse, no doubt aware of the outcry her age would provoke, embraces the controversy with the bold hashtag beneath her name, #BornIn2001. They also claim she’s the “new Kate Moss.”

Penty of kids model, but one 12-year-old girl has ignited controversy for her very grownup look on the cover of the high-end French fashion magazine Jalouse

Blondeau’s sultry pout may be disconcerting, but it’s nothing compared to her 2011 Vogue Paris spread, in which she posed in full make-up, revealing adult designer clothes, jewels, and high heels.

That Vogue Paris spread, unsurprisingly, caused an Internet outcry.

“I am really concerned about her young age,” one Tumblr user, modebaroque, wrote. “How could her parents rob her of her childhood so she could pursue modeling?”

“That is child pornography, and it is wrong,” another user said.

Blondeau is the daughter of French footballer Patrick Blondeau andVéronika Loubry, who has appeared in a handful of French TV shows.
After her daughter’s racy 2011 Vogue Paris shoot, Loubry defended her daughter’s provocative poses.

“The only thing that shocks me about the photo is the necklace that she’s wearing, which is worth 3 million Euros,” she said.

Blondeau isn’t the first young model to cause controversy when it comes to age. In 1980, a then-15-year-old Brooke Shields modeled jeans for Calvin Klein in a commercial, saying, “Do you want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” The tagline became iconic and controversial. Shields also played a prostitute in the film Pretty Baby at the age of 12.
